How to Make a Homemade Cheap Dog Pen: Ideas & Tricks

There can be many reasons you need a corral for animals: having small children inside the house and doing some activity in the garden so that the dog does not disturb you or many more.

In this article, I will share some tips to make a safe and simple dog fence yourself.

Wooden Dog Pen

Wooden pens are handy indoors, but they can also work outdoors. Follow the steps to make a dog fence at home:

Procedure

• Decide on the height of the fence. It is crucial to choose the size of the pen before proceeding. A fence for dogs can be 1.20 m and fences 1 m high.
• Locate the corners. Put stakes in the corners where the fence will go.
• Square up the corners. Tie a string to the stakes. Use a right angle to make sure the fence is square.
• Stake the middle posts. After squaring the corners, measure 8 ft (2.5 m) or less along the ropes and stake those positions to indicate the location of the support posts.
• Dig the holes. First, drill the holes where you put the stakes. Bury the posts at least 30% of their height.
• Set up the posts. Place 3-4 inches (7.6-10 cm) of gravel at the bottom of the hole. Place the post in the hole and line it up. Check that all corners are square. Use a level to check that the post is straight and at the correct height.
• Add a concrete base. Hold the post in place and carefully pour the concrete until the hole is 2/3 full. Add water to the top and use a stick to mix the cement. Let the concrete dry.
• Fill with soil. Fill the remaining space with soil when the concrete dries.
• Layout the support boards. Cut 2 x 4 rails (or horizontal support boards) of the appropriate length to center both ends of the posts together. If you can, use a single rail for the entire length of the fence section. The rails should be no more than 24 in. (60 cm) apart, so most fences have 2 to 3 rails. Attach the rails using countersunk screws.
• Lay the vertical boards. Overlap the boards with one another with a very small distance between each panel. Position another board centered over the gap and nail it down.
• Treat the wood. In the end, you can paint the fence or give it a waterproof finish so that it stays for a long time. You can use an oil-based sealer or exterior polish.

Puppy pen

Learn below how to make a very simple home dog fence with pallets or pallets. This option of dog pen is recommended for puppies since you can use pallets that are not of high quality.

Procedure:

• Collect the number of pallets you need. These pallets usually measure 1×1, so you must gather the necessary amount to assemble a square.

• Purchase hinges and brackets. Join the pallets with corbels at the top and the bottom. It will allow you to create a sturdy fence.

• Put up insurance after placing the hinges on the pallet that will be the door. Add a lock so you can quickly close it and prevent dogs from escaping from the pet pen.

Big Dog Pen

Here I will share the instructions to make a corral for big dogs and have the peace of mind that if you have visitors, your dog will not bother and have the comfort it needs.

Materials :

• PVC pipes
• PVC pipe cutter
• PVC joints

Procedure:

• Cuts 24 pieces of PVC pipe to 6 feet (1.82 m) long. These pieces will form the four walls of your dog’s pen.
• Cut 20 pieces of PVC that are 2 inches long. These pieces will be the connection of each corner piece from one layer to the next.
• Connect the bottom of the pen. You should leave the four most extended PVC pipes in the shape of a square. Connect the tubes using the corner joints that have three cavities. One pocket should come out of the top of the corner, and the other two should open at a 90-degree angle. Each corner should have a free hole pointing upward.
• Assemble the top of the pen. Do it the same way you built the first one and set it aside.
• Insert a 2-inch (5 cm) piece of PVC into each of the holes pointing up from the first layer you completed. Leave at least an inch (2.54 cm) of the small tube sticking out of the hole.
• Make a four-piece arrangement of 6-foot (1.82 m) square-shaped PVC tubing. Fasten the pipes together using the PVC corner joints. Use a joint that has one hole more than the others. It has to point downwards.
• Place the second layer of PVC on top of the first. Position the cape so that the free downward-pointing holes sink into the small pieces of PVC that you already inserted into the third hole from each corner in the first coat. Both layers must be connected to make a solid two-layer square.
• Insert another four 2-inch (5 cm) pieces of PVC into the holes that were left pointing up from the second layer. Assemble the third layer the same way you did the second. Continue this procedure until you assemble and connect the fifth layer.
• Attach the sixth and final layer that you have already made. Connect it to the fifth layer using the four small pieces of PVC tubing that connect each layer of the pen. Now you should have a square PVC pipe playpen for your dog.

Foldable Dog Pen

Another homemade dog pen option is the folding playpen. It can cover spaces in the doors or subdivide the interior of an environment within the house. Follow the instructions and learn how to make this playpen for small and medium dogs.

Procedure:

• Measure the width and height of the door. Get two utility doors that are half the width of the door. A 28-inch (71.12 cm) opening will require two 14-inch (35.56 cm) panels.
• The door panels should be 1 to 2 inches (2.54 to 5.08 cm) shorter than the door frame if you are installing a track system. Follow the manufacturer’s mounting instructions for proper placement.
• Trim both panels to the same height. If necessary, you can trim the hollow center doors 1 inch (2.54 cm) from the top and bottom. Do this slowly as the exterior laminate panel of the open door tends to chip.
• If you need to trim it more than 2 inches (5.08 cm), cut it at one end only, remove the laminate from the inner center of the wood, and reinsert it into the bottom of the door using wood glue.
• Trim the width of each panel 1/8 inch (0.32 cm) to accommodate the hinges. If the doors are more comprehensive than the opening, trim an additional 1 inch from each side, if necessary.
• If you use blinds for your folding door, trim both sides of each panel midway to maintain a balanced look. Gently sand the cut and exposed edges with sandpaper.
• Join the two panels, or blinds, with three piano hinges. Adjust the hinges to each panel, making sure they lie flat against the edge of the door. Lay the panels on the floor, line them up along the edges, and secure them with the clamps to prevent them from shifting while you install the hinges. Remove the clamps.
• Put the folding door in the final position and check if the space is adequate and if the hinges fold in the correct direction. If the hinge doesn’t bend properly, flip the door down and install it that way. Hold the level and check that the door opens and closes quickly. If there are problems, check that the hinges are aligned.
• Install the mounting hardware. Most pivot mounting bolts require drilled holes above and below the door and mounting hardware installed on the floor and top of the door frame trim.
